The STRONG High Seas project, together with Germany, the Secretariats of the Abidjan Convention and Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS), and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) hosted a workshop titled ‘Building Capacities for Regional Ocean Governance: Marine Genetic Resources and Area-based Management Tools’ on 25 August 2019 on the side-lines of the third session of negotiations for an international agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (IGC 3) in New York, USA. Keeping an Eye on the High Seas – Strengthening Monitoring, Control and Surveillance through a New Marine Biodiversity Treaty

New policy brief – Keeping an Eye on the High Seas: Strengthening Monitoring, Control and Surveillance through a New Marine Biodiversity Treaty is now available. Effective monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) is critical for the success of marine conservation and management measures. Whereas States have the exclusive right to manage the marine resources within their national jurisdiction, areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) are subject to a complex patchwork of international rules and regulations.

Science for Solutions: Bringing Stakeholders Together to Improve Ocean Planning and Governance in ABNJ of the South-East Pacific – STRONG High Seas Dialogue Workshop 2

Representatives from Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru (CPPS member States) as well as Panama, global and regional organisations, regional scientific institutions, academia and NGOs took part in a three-day workshop from 13 – 15 March 2019 in Guayaquil, Ecuador. STRONG High Seas Presented at Pacific Workshop on BBNJ – “High hopes for high seas”

From 30 January to 1 February 2019, the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner (OPOC), organised a regional workshop on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). Held at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat in Fiji, the three-day workshop brought together delegates from across the region to discuss key issues for the ongoing negotiations in New York.
