From the 27^th to the 31^st of May 2019, the XXXIX Congress of Marine Sciences was held in Iquique, Chile. This congress is held every year in different parts of the country, and is the one event in Chile, which brings together the largest number of scientists working on marine sciences. From 30 January to 1 February 2019, the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner (OPOC), organised a regional workshop on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). Held at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat in Fiji, the three-day workshop brought together delegates from across the region to discuss key issues for the ongoing negotiations in New York.
