STRONG Dialogue Workshop 3 on ‘Enhancing the Knowledge Base for Cross-Sectoral Management and Ocean Governance in ABNJ of the Southeast Pacific’
On 26-27 February 2020, the Secretariat of the Comisión Permanente del Pacífico Sur (CPPS) and the STRONG High Seas project organised the third Dialogue Workshop in the Southeast Pacific region. The workshop brought together more than 50 participants from CPPS member countries as well as global and regional organisations, regional scientific institutions, academia, the private sector and NGOs.

The STRONG High Seas project was invited to take part in the inter-ministerial National Dialogue titled ‘Mejora de la base de conocimientos para la gestión intersectorial y la gobernanza de los océanos en áreas más allá de la jurisdicción nacional del Pacífico sudoriental’ organised by the Government of Peru on 25 February 2020 in Lima, Peru, to discuss the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). The ocean covers more than 70 % of the planet and is a vital support system for all life – but both coastal areas and the high seas are under threat. Currently a lack of information, especially regarding the understudied Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), is hindering protection of these precious regions. STRONG High Seas Expert Workshop on Socioeconomic Analysis – Barranquilla, Colombia
STRONG High Seas workshop on socioeconomic analysis takes first steps to explore the value created, and potentially lost, due to changes in biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. The workshop brought together twelve expert representatives from the CPPS member States Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Peru gathered from 23-25 October 2019 in Barranquilla, Colombia.

New Policy Brief on Ecosystem-based Management of the Global Ocean
The STRONG High Seas project has published a new policy brief on the possible role of an internationally legally binding instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) in developing and using regional governance frameworks for advancing the implementation of integrated ecosystem-based management (EBM).
