STRONG HIGH SEAS – Capacity Building Workshop in Africa

Participants from the western coast of Africa met at the Lagoon Beach Hotel, Cape Town, for a two-day capacity building workshop on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) on the 27th and 28th November 2019. The workshop was the first of two sessions planned for the Southeast Atlantic region, organized under the STRONG High Seas Project, by the International Ocean Institute – African Region, in collaboration with BirdLife International. STRONG High Seas Expert Workshop on Strengthening Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) in the Southeast Pacific

On 14-15 November 2019, STRONG High Seas project partner IDDRI organised a regional workshop to discuss how to strengthen monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) in the Southeast Pacific. This workshop was held at CPPS Headquarters, Guayaquil, Ecuador and builds on two international expert meeting previously held in Paris on technological tools (July 2018) and policy options (April 2019). Member States representatives of the Abidjan Convention and Nairobi Convention from Angola, Benin, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea Equatorial, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sao Tomé e Príncipe, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, The Gambia, Togo, global and regional organisations, regional scientific institutions, academia and NGOs took part in a three-day workshop from 10 – 12 June 2019 in Cape Town, South Africa. STRONG High Seas ‘Building Capacities for Regional Ocean Governance’ Workshop

The STRONG High Seas project, together with Germany, the Secretariats of the Abidjan Convention and Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS), and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) hosted a workshop titled ‘Building Capacities for Regional Ocean Governance: Marine Genetic Resources and Area-based Management Tools’ on 25 August 2019 on the side-lines of the third session of negotiations for an international agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (IGC 3) in New York, USA. Keeping an Eye on the High Seas – Strengthening Monitoring, Control and Surveillance through a New Marine Biodiversity Treaty

New policy brief – Keeping an Eye on the High Seas: Strengthening Monitoring, Control and Surveillance through a New Marine Biodiversity Treaty is now available. Effective monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) is critical for the success of marine conservation and management measures. Whereas States have the exclusive right to manage the marine resources within their national jurisdiction, areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) are subject to a complex patchwork of international rules and regulations.

PROG at Meeting of the Communities of Ocean Action “From Commitments to Action: Implementing SDG14,” 30-31 May 2019, Incheon

From 30 – 31 May, the PROG Marine Regions Forum project attended the UN Meeting of the Communities of Ocean Action (COAs) in Incheon, South Korea. The Meeting brought together the Voluntary Commitments (VCs) made at the 2017 UN Ocean Conference – a growing list that now includes more than 1,500 commitments for action to advance the implementation of SDG 14.
