About the Webinar
Negotiations for a legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction have been taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York since 2018. Four elements form the basis for the negotiations, namely: marine genetic resources (MGRs), area-based management tools (ABMTs), environmental impact assessments (EIAs), and capacity building and the transfer of marine technology. At the sidelines of the last Intergovernmental Conference in August 2019, the STRONG High Seas project co-hosted a workshop titled ‘Building Capacities for Regional Ocean Governance: Marine Genetic Resources and Area-based Management Tools’ to discuss topics around marine genetic resources and exchange lessons learned on regional ocean governance. This webinar will give the opportunity for interested participants who were not able to attend this workshop in New York to learn more about the topic of marine genetic resources in the context of the global negotiations: from in-situ sampling to digital sequences and the role of marine science and capacity building. This webinar is part of a series of events organised by the STRONG High Seas project and dealing with topics around the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
