The STRONG High Seas project will be running a series of virtual capacity development workshops through 2021.

We welcome anyone with an interest in Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, with particular focus on the Abidjan Convention Region. We hope that the series will provide the participants with tools and knowledge to share with their colleagues and across national departments to help the countries of the Abidjan Convention to enhance ocean governance in the region and implement the BBNJ treaty in their national context after its ratification.

A certificate will be issued to all those who participate in a minimum four of the events in the series.

Simultaneous translation will be available in English and French for all events.

The first of the series was held in June and introduced participants to the United Nations Law of the Sea and Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction. The third interactive virtual workshop will introduce you to the socio-economic importance of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) to countries in the Abidjan Convention Region. We will introduce you to Environmental Impact Assessments and their relevance to Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. These themes are under discussion as part of the BBNJ negotiations; we will see what the current status of the negotiation text is and we will discuss the various opportunities and challenges for African countries to implement these tools into national legal frameworks.
