STRONG High Seas project launches stakeholder website about biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction

The STRONG High Seas project launched interactive websites about biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) for key stakeholders in the Southeast Pacific and the Southeast Atlantic .

The websites serve as a key information source for the main stakeholders in the Southeast Pacific and the Southeast Atlantic regions, promote a continuous dialogue and engagement, and explore questions such as:

  • “What are areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ)?”
  • “Who is responsible for protecting and monitoring the abundant marine life in these areas?”
  • “How is a surveillance of an area that represents 64% of the ocean surface possible?”

Furthermore, the platform provides stakeholders with insights about topics such as the definition of biodiversity (there is more to it than one might think), the pressures marine biodiversity faces in ABNJ, existing legal and institutional frameworks, status quo of the UN BBNJ negotiations and many more…
