The policy brief introduces the value of and threats to the marine environment and biodiversity beyond national boundaries, describes the current framework for ocean governance in ABNJ and provides a basic background on the upcoming BBNJ Intergovernmental Conference (the first session will be held from 4 to 17 September 2018 in New York). The policy brief highlights the importance of the interplay between the global and regional levels and identifies possible options for underpinning a strong global BBNJ agreement through regional and sectoral governance.
