Online Workshop: Ocean Governance and COVID-19 – Building resilience for marine regions

The Marine Regions Forum Online Workshop on  ‘Ocean Governance and COVID-19 – Building resilience for marine regions’ took place on Thursday, 28 January 2021.

A summary report is available here.

The workshop was organized by the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS), the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), and TMG-Think Tank for Sustainability, together with the German Environment Agency (UBA), the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the European Commission.

The aim of this interactive workshop was to explore possible pathways to address the effects of the COVID-19 crisis in marine regions. It brought together actors from different marine regions to (i) discuss the socio-economic and environmental impacts of COVID-19 in marine regions, (ii) explore options for immediate responses and longer-term recovery; and (iii) discuss impacts on regional cooperation and possible consequences for ocean governance.

The workshop builds on the Marine Regions Forum 2019, which gathered over 200 international ocean actors to discuss new approaches to strengthen regional ocean governance processes.
