{"id":908,"date":"2018-09-18T11:55:09","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T11:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prog-ocean.org\/?p=908"},"modified":"2018-09-18T13:38:31","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T13:38:31","slug":"strong-high-seas-biodiversity-beyond-national-jurisdiction-capacity-building-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prog-ocean.org\/blog\/2018\/09\/18\/strong-high-seas-biodiversity-beyond-national-jurisdiction-capacity-building-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"STRONG High Seas Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Capacity Building Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 3 September 2018 in New York, the STRONG High Seas project, together with Germany, the Abidjan Convention Secretariat and the Secretariat of the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific, hosted a capacity building workshop\u00a0to support State delegates to the negotiations on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ).\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The workshop provided the opportunity to bring together ministry representatives and UN negotiators from the Southeast Pacific and Southeast Atlantic regions to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare for the BBNJ negotiations in terms of what they would entail and what could be expected;<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to a better understanding of the BBNJ negotiations in terms of the opportunities and challenges of the negotiations of an international instrument on BBNJ for the Southeast Pacific and Southeast Atlantic regions;<\/li>\n<li>Highlight the importance, opportunities and challenges of regional ocean governance approaches for the implementation of a future BBNJ agreement under UNCLOS;<\/li>\n<li>Provide a networking opportunity for participants from different regions and countries and ensure mutual learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The agenda from the workshop can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prog-ocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/180918-Agenda-UN-Training.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The STRONG High Seas project (\u2018Strengthening Regional Ocean Governance for the High Seas\u2019) is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
