{"id":789,"date":"2018-08-22T14:59:19","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T14:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prog-ocean.org\/?p=789"},"modified":"2020-07-03T08:04:35","modified_gmt":"2020-07-03T08:04:35","slug":"strong-high-seas-webinar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prog-ocean.org\/blog\/2018\/08\/22\/strong-high-seas-webinar\/","title":{"rendered":"STRONG High Seas Online Seminar &#8211; Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction in the Southeast Pacific and Southeast Atlantic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On August 16, the STRONG High Seas project, together with the Abidjan Convention Secretariat and the Secretariat of the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific, held an online seminar on &#8220;Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction in the Southeast Pacific and Southeast Atlantic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Around 70 global participants from attended the online seminar, which included presentations from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mgel.env.duke.edu\/people\/patrick-n-halpin\/\">Prof. Patrick N. Halpin<\/a>, Director of the Geospatial Ecology Program &amp; Associate Professor of Marine Geospatial Ecology, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/mgel.env.duke.edu\/people\/daniel-dunn\/\">Dr. Daniel Dunn<\/a>, Assistant Research Professor\u00a0 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mgel.env.duke.edu\/people\/guillermo-ortuno-crespo\/\">Guillermo Ortu\u00f1o Crespo<\/a>, PhD Candidate at the Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab, Duke University, USA<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Johanna_Pruessmann\">Johanna Pr\u00fcssmann Uribe<\/a>, analyst of ecosystem services and climate change, WWF Colombia<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seabirds.net\/pastspot-rosswanless.html\/\">Dr. Ross Wanless<\/a>, Africa Coordinator for the BirdLife International Marine Programme, South Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A recording of the online seminar can be accessed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IFnjwFezXv8&amp;feature=youtu.be\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The online seminar focused on the status and role of marine biodiversity in ABNJ, including the threats and challenges it faces as well as the opportunities for its conservation and sustainable use, both globally and in the Southeast Pacific and Southeast Atlantic regions. It also provided the international context of marine science for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in ABNJ and highlights advances in the identification of ecologically sensitive or vulnerable areas in ABNJ. The online seminar is part of a series of events that the project organizes during the Intergovernmental Conference on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction in September 2018 in New York.
